“So what do you think about the band?” Jasper asks Tobias, gesturing to the stage. “Hate to be a dick, but I’m not loving their sound. The mix is average, and the drummer sucks balls.”

Tobias doesn’t bother looking. His stare remains fixed on me.

I swallow, my fingers twitching. They want to dive into his midnight hair and tug on the ends until he hisses my name.

I slip them into the back pockets of my jeans instead.

Bad move.

Doing so has my shoulders straightening. Meaning, my breasts push forward like I’m offering them up as a delicacy.

He growls.

Maybe the plunging halter top wasn’t a good idea. In my defense, I felt a hell of a lot braver getting dressed in the safety of my hotel room. Despite being in a darkened music venue with the security of hordes of people nearby, I feel naked under his gaze.

Tobias’s smoldering glare is that intense.

It strips me of the barriers I put between us before I can question why I put them there in the first place.

Strangely, rather than self-consciousness swelling beneath my ribs, a burgeoning confidence forms. Embracing it, I tip my head to the side. “Well? Aren’t you going to answer the man?”

“No.”

The word is a crack of the whip on my heated skin. My eyelids flicker closed, and I inhale, relishing the lash. Blinking them open again, I clear my throat. “How come?”

Tobias gets all up in my face. Towering over me, he blocks out the light flashing from the rigging behind him. “Because Jasper already knows my answer. He knew it before he even asked.”

Tearing my gaze away, I raise an eyebrow at Jasper.

He shrugs, grinning. “What can I say? He knows me.”

Tobias grips my cheek, forcing my eyes back to him. “The real question is, why the fuck are you here?”

I want to answer. I open my mouth, ready for a reply, but he sucks the words from the tip of my tongue, swallowing them before I can speak.

“Well?” he mocks, repeating my words from moments ago. “Aren’t you going to answer?”

“I—”

Jasper wraps an arm around my shoulders, pulling me to his side. “It’s simple, bro. I invited her.”

The hand that cupped my cheek burned an imprint on my skin. Even though it’s now clenched in a fist by his side, I can still feel it.

“Is that so?” Tobias’s voice is low, deliberate, scary as hell.

“Yeah.” His friend nods, either oblivious or uncaring of the tempest gathering in Tobias’s eyes. “She’s my date.”

I whip my head to the side. “Your what?”

Tobias stills. The air around him crackles with unshed energy.

“No need to be shy, baby.” Jasper grins. “I asked you out, picked you up, and brought you here. We’re definitely entering date territory.”

“But I thought—” I try to escape from his hold.

Jasper doesn’t let me loose. Instead, he nods in the direction of the bar. “Tell you what, how about I buy you a drink to cement the deal?”

“Thanks, but I’m not thirsty.” No matter how hard I try, I can’t escape his grasp.
